Poor Mary, Tired To Death

A Winston Churchill quote is one of the greatest sources of inspiration for the gringa when it comes to historical research:

“History is written by the victors.”

And the funniest thing about the truth of this quote is that Winston Churchill, whom a World War II victory would not have been possible without, did not even originate this quote, yet he always gets the glory. Perhaps it is because he is a victor!

With that in mind, the gringa would like to look at some annals of history comparing the words of the victorious with the words of the vanquished.  As an American, I will begin with my own country’s origins, the arrival of Europeans upon the soil of North America. What is the perspective of American history as told by traditional American historians compared to what is preserved by the indigenous people these European invaders eventually overpowered? Of course the stories vastly differ. But there were more people vanquished by the white men who arrived on the Atlantic shores of modern day Pennsylvania in the 16 & 1700s. There were also women, considered chattel and property. They, too, tell a different history of America than is traditionally recounted by the pre-dominantly white male historian.

Mary Cooper (1714-1778)

At the ripe, old age of 54 Mary Cooper began her diary, re-telling the events of being married to a Long Island farmer. Her personal record spans the years of 1768-1773, ending five years before her death. Poor Mary died childless, all of her 6 children passing on long before her: 2 died in infancy, 2 as young children, and 2 died in adulthood. Her tale is a story of struggle, tragedy and perseverance of a new life in a foreign and hostile land. Was it really worth the sacrifice to be part of a colonial invasion, laying claim to land that belonged to others? Would it have been more wise to remain within the confines of the existing British empire rather than seek to expand it at the expense of indigenous peoples, scratching out a meager existence in an undeveloped country? Dear reader, you read Mary’s words and decide for yourself.

On November 17, a Thursday in 1768, Mary notes how tired she is from a day of cooking and washing dishes. The gringa finds this sad. Women and men alike often consider cooking a joy, even a hobby. Back then, for poor Mary, it was hard labor. Washing a day’s worth of dishes was a task of hard labor as well.

The colonists are almost always depicted as pious Christian folk. We are regaled with stories of church gatherings. Their fervent religious beliefs even inspired the notorious Salem witch trials where young women and old crones were tortured and murdered for superstitious reasons. Yet Mary recounts a Sabbath day in November as being anything but a religious observance of the day of rest. She claimed that amidst a raging rain and snowstorm that she had not a single minute of rest. Keeping her home dry and warm was demanding work.

About one month later, two days in a row leading right up to Christmas Eve, poor Mary was quite miserable. Cleaning house as the northwest wind blew snow all day long made her “tired almost to death”. Christmas Eve, traditionally thought to be a time of gay celebration, also had Mary “tired almost to death”. Why? Because she had been drying and ironing clothes from sun up to sun down. The gringa hates to iron. I don’t purchase a single stitch of clothing if it has to be ironed or sent to the dry cleaners. The gringa believes that Spandex is the single greatest invention on this darn planet. I would have been one of the worst dressed colonists. That’s for darn sure. Poor, poor Mary. What an awful holiday memory.

But maybe Mary enjoys entertaining guests. The gringa knows many women who jump at the chance of being the hostess with the mostest. Maybe having company will cheer up poor, dear Mary.

Let’s see, January 7, 1769… it’s a Saturday! Perfect day for company, right? Wrong. Poor, poor Mary records that she is “tired almost to death” from waiting on her visitors. What about Christian hospitality? Mary’s spirit is a little lacking in such feelings because her feet ached as if her bones had been “laid bare”. Egad! Poor soul! Mary claimed she had no rest at all throughout the week. The gringa’s guess is that it must take that long to prepare for a single afternoon of company.

Dear readers, I believe I would have become a hermit or an eccentric old woman to keep company at bay rather than suffer the likes of what poor Mary endured! All the extra work to prepare for guests meant that she didn’t even have time to take care of cleaning and ironing her own clothes! What a horror! Throw a party and then not have a single thing to wear the following week! Who knew?! Poor Mary couldn’t believe there was possibly a single person who had such a miserable life as her own… “Did ever poore creature [have su]ch a life before.”

On February 12, a day the gringa would look forward to with romance only 2 days away, poor Mary was miserable again. So miserable and on the Sabbath as well. Once again, no rest on the Sabbath for Mary. She pens, “I hoped for some rest but am forst to get dinner and slave hard all day long”.

A week later, on the next Sabbath, the gringa’s insight into Mary takes a dark turn. Perhaps Mary’s life is not really all that bad. Maybe the problem is with Mary, or at least her religion. The gringa thinks Mary lives in perpetual stress due to the “fear of God” nature of her religion and the demands she believes it makes of her. Consider her words:

“I went to the Newlig[ht] meten with greate delight and offer[ed] my self to be a member with them. [They] seemed to be very glad but I was sudingly seased with a great horr[or] and darkeness. E[ven] think darkeness as migh[t] be felt. O, my God, why has thou forsaken me… I came home before the worship began, most distrest.”

Things weren’t any better for Mary the next day. She writes that she is still “in greate darkness still”. The following Sabbath she was still too troubled to attend her religious meeting. Her emotional and religious crisis stretches on into March.

On the 12th of that month she wrote that she was trying to get her clothes ready to attend the meeting despite the fact that she felt “as much distress as my heart can hold.” Two people came to visit her and she recorded that “I am forced to get diner and cannot go to metan atall. Alas, how unhappy and meresabel I am. I feele banished from God and all good.”

The gringa just feels for poor, poor Mary. I remember feeling miserable. It was called an unhappy marriage. The gringa just packed up and ran away from home. As the gringa reads Mary’s words of suffering my mind is screaming, “Run away, Mary! Run away!” But, back then, where would she go? How would she survive?

In April the gringa finds out what happens to naughty women of Mary’s time. Friday, Mary has some visitors. One of her guests is a woman named Tabthea. Mary writes that Tabthea quarrels with “our peopel”  and “Semon Cooper turned her out of doors and threw her over the fence”. The gringa thinks, “What in the world was wrong with those people?” I mean, the history I was taught was all about the generosity and goodness of the early American colonists, their goodness related to their religious beliefs. But here you have a woman who argues a point and then a man tosses her, not just out of the house, but OVER A FENCE! Outrageous!

Throughout April and May, a time when the gringa would be celebrating the arrival of Spring, poor Mary talks over and over again about her distress. It is all related to how much trouble she has with the labor demands of keeping her clothes cleaned and ironed. Things got so bad that on a Saturday, trying to prepare for the Sabbath, she records that she is simply “dirty and distressed as ever”. By the time Sabbath arrives there are “No cloths irond” and she is simply “freted and tired almost to death”.  The next week was no better. Poor Mary had “Much hard worke, dirty and distrest.” She later receives a lady guest who is having problems with her sons. Mary’s perspective is that “We seeme to have little or no sence of any thing but our troubels.” It seems Mary’s depression was the common plight of the female American colonist.

July 13, 1769 is an anniversary of sorts for Mary. It marks the 40th year since she married and came to America with her husband. And how does Mary feel about this? Yes, the dear readers have guessed it, morose, little Mary is not reflecting with gladness… “here have I seene little els but harde labour and sorrow, crosses of every kind. I think in every repect the state of my affairs is more then forty times worse then when I came here first, except that I am nearer the desierered haven.”

The gringa thinks that it’s safe to say that American historians have romanticized a history that is anything but romantic. The colonists could have done themselves a favor, as well as the indigenous people they ended up massacring, by just staying home across the pond!  And that’s enough of poor Mary for now! The gringa is thoroughly depressed and needs a walk in the park because I’m darn sure not doing any laundry anytime soon!

CTs, Just As Interesting As ETs

The past couple of weeks the gringa has enjoyed exploring the veracity of claims that attempt to link extra-terrestrial origins to ancient Egyptians and ancient Peruvians. Writing about such topics can result in interesting messages imploring me to also explore conspiracy theories connected with the “space race”. I have been encouraged to delve into the “black ops” and “secret space programs” that have been ongoing for decades.

Now, although the gringa finds such ideas intriguing and fascinating, I have foregone writing on such subjects because of the principle of journalistic integrity. The very nature of a black operation or secret government program makes it impossible to verify any accusation. But I must admit my natural curiosity and love of science fiction has made it impossible for me to resist.

The compromise I will make is to write a post that makes no claim as to whether these programs really do exist or not but, rather, present the claims that have been made. Although I may offer opinions, sarcastic or otherwise, I will attempt to remain true to a policy of journalistic integrity. I encourage the dear reader to simply enjoy the read and please do not run out and invest in a prepper bunker.  Here goes…

What Is The Dark Fleet?

According to certain conspiracy theorists the Dark Fleet is a secret, government black ops space program. These CTs (not ETs, dear reader, but CTs… conspiracy theorists) claim that there is grave danger to the public posed by this program. The aim of this program is to save mankind from extinction upon this slowly dying planet. However, the danger is that not all of us will be saved. Only the elite (wealthy) and highly skilled will be rescued. As a matter of fact, many of the these elite and highly skilled have already been removed from this planet and transferred to cosmic colonies throughout the twenty years this secret space program has been in operation.

Apparently the origins of Dark Fleet are found within Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany. Desperately developing advanced technologies that would help the Nazis win the war and rule the world, Hitler funneled huge amounts of cash into different research and development programs. The ranks of the Nazi party were conditioned to be naturally suspicious of everyone. Because of this many secret societies evolved, like-minded Nazis working together for specific group goals. Many of these secret societies were devoted to developing world changing technologies.

It is easy to peruse historical records of World War II and discover that Nazis ventured all over the world, expeditions dedicated to research as well as collection of unusual objects, sacred objects and esoteric objects. CTs claim that they were also looking for extra-terrestrial objects and technologies connected to ancient civilizations. But they assert that the expeditions actually commenced immediately after World War I. Now, World War I officially ended November 11, 1918. The Nazi party officially formed February 24, 1920. So, it’s possible this assertion is true that Nazis were searching for esoteric items long before World War II began.

Thanks to the gringa’s previous posts of the past couple of weeks, we can all rest assured that the Nazis didn’t find ET technology in Egypt or Peru. But, according to the CTs, that’s not where the Nazis searched. The Nazi expeditions were dispatched to China, India and Tibet. CTs claim that while there they discovered ancient texts which they confiscated as well as forcibly removing monks and scribes to serve as interpreters, transporting all back to Germany.

As Hitler and the Nazi party came into official power in the 1930s, the search for objects and texts that could contain the potential of amazing power grew with great fervor. The most active Nazi secret societies involved in this activity have been named by CTs as: Thule, Vril and Black Sun. Hmmm. Can anything be discovered about a secret society? Wouldn’t that be oxymoronish? Public access to information about a club that is secret so officially doesn’t exist?

Thule Society – Apparently these guys were not too good at keeping secrets. They actually have a Wikipedia page so they are no big secret. They sponsored the German Workers’ party which was later reorganized by Hitler into the National Socialist German Workers’ Party and was his political vehicle to power.

This not-so-secret secret society evidently has, at some time or other, published their old membership list which contains the names of some very illustrious Nazis. Of course, true to Nazi ideology, the tenets of belief were commitment to the purity of the Aryan race and denouncing relations to any non-Aryan. The name of the society is rooted in a belief that an ancient landmass named Thule once existed in the northernmost regions of Scandinavia and this is where the Aryan race originated.

Not only did Thule members believe in an Atlantis type motherland, but they also believed that the Earth was hollow. The hollow earth theory purports that the outer earth is a protective bubble housing an entire civilization secretly within. The Thulies believed that the inhabitants of inner earth had psychokinetic powers and if they could harness this power for the Nazi party they could rule the world.

The Thule Society is a favorite among CTs because this secret society had a belief in ETs, supernatural abilities and esoteric practices such as alchemy.

Vril – And yet another not-so-secret society with a Wikipedia page and all sorts of public information widely available. Interestingly enough, there is no hard evidence to prove or disprove this secret society actually existed so they were better at keeping secrets than the Thule.

The closest thing to “evidence” that such a society existed is a quote from a magazine article written by Willy Ley, a rocket engineer from Germany who was “relocated” to the U.S. in 1937. Ley claims that this “secret society” was founded based on an 1871 novel “The Coming Race” authored by Edward Bulwer-Lyton. Its premise was a fictional account of Earth’s sub-terranean “master race” who used their supernatural power that was called “vril”. Famous occultists like Helena Blavatsky claimed that this work of fiction was, in fact, based upon secret, esoteric truths. The gringa only says, “Mm hmm.”

The membership roll of Vril reads like a “Who’s Who” of old school psychics. Probably all on board because of their devotion to the queen of all psychics, Helena Blavatsky.

Needless to say, the gringa believes it to be one heck of a stretch by CTs to attribute any credibility to Vril ideology much less the actual existence of a secret society by the same name that has secret space technology. No, rather than a secret ET society, it sounds more like a secret book club.

Black Sun –  Not only does this not-so-secret secret society have a Wikipedia page, among many other information resources, they even have their own dot-org website. Yes, not a secret at all. They boldly proclaim their online presence. However, the gringa highly doubts that this is the original Black Sun secret society of Nazi era Germany. Rather, it is probably produced by CTs who desperately want to legitimize their cause. So, the gringa returns to Wikipedia.

This secret society has its own occult symbol that was openly used by Nazis, so, again, not so secret. The philosophy of Black Sun ideology is that when consciousness reaches ultimate enlightenment light and darkness reverse, thus what was hidden becomes revealed.

Experts on secret societies say that the Black Sun secret society was a secret society within a secret society. I know, I know, the dear reader is scratching their head saying, “What was that?” The Black Sun membership was comprised of the elite ranks within the Thule secret society. Aha, secrets within secrets because, like the gringa said, Nazis were hyper-suspicious and trusted no one, not even a secret society blood brother.

The secrets of this society have remained mostly hidden. Evidently, they had such a bad reputation (and a Heinrich Himmler connection) that even today it is illegal in Germany to reproduce their symbols and wear its insignia. This secret organization was strongly connected to the expeditions into Tibet.

The Tibet missions centered around the SS searching for sacred relics (the Holy Grail and Ark of the Covenant) and extra-terrestrial technology, presumably from crash-landed UFOs.

Their Activity Today

CTs claim that members of these secret societies are alive and well and working from secret bases in Antarctica and South America. Supposedly they have created advanced spacecraft and weapons. They claim this is the real reason behind Admiral Byrd’s Antarctica expedition, to lead an invasion force of 4,000 American, Australian and British troops into this secret Nazi base. In a mission dubbed “Operation High Jump”, CTs claim that Byrd’s forces met with strong resistance by Nazis using their advanced spacecraft and weapons.

Interestingly enough, much of “Operation High Jump” can actually be confirmed. For Byrd’s expedition to be only exploratory in nature, it is highly provocative to discover that among the naval vessels in the fleet were destroyers, submarines, and an aircraft carrier. It gets curioser and curioser to the gringa when U.S. National Defense archives record that one of the vessels, USS Pine Island (a seaplane tender) was not just sold and scrapped but was actually struck from all Naval records.

Upon the conclusion of Admiral Byrd’s “exploration mission”, he returned and recommended that allied forces establish a military defense base at the North Pole. Now, at the time of these recommendations the war was over. So, what was it that he perceived to be a threat? The gringa smells a mystery and upcoming research on all things related to Admiral Byrd.

CTs also claim that scientific and engineering experts within these organizations succeeded in building an anti-gravity spaceship and that it was confiscated by the American military and returned to the U.S. under the utmost secrecy. In fact, the conspiracy of CTs goes even deeper.

They assert that these secret societies populated by Nazi party members were actually not devoted to Nazi ideology. Rather, they exploited the resources and power of the party to further their own agenda. When Nazi Germany ultimately lost the war they then aligned themselves willingly with the United States who was willing to secretly fund the research and development of their highly advanced toys of war. The offshoot of this is the development of a U.S. dark ops space program called “Dark Fleet”.

And to discover the CT claims for the details of the “Dark Fleet” program, the dear reader will just have to come back for the next interesting installment.

A quick recap of what the gringa thinks are the only credible point of interest: the records of Admiral Byrd. I believe the secret society of Vril to be wishful thinking on the part of CTs. It was actually a book club which desperately wished for the story to be true. However, desperately wishing something so does not make it so. If the Thule secret society was based on the existence of a non-existence figment of an author’s imagination, Vril, then, although it was a real secret society, its basis for existence, the discovery of Vril’s location in order to exploit the supernatural power of its inhabitants, has no connection with reality. That would also mean that the secret society Black Sun within the secret society Thule was also based on something which did not exist. All of this would then mean that it is highly unlikely that “Dark Fleet” is a reality. But the gringa digs on.

“Back Up Life…”

SpaceX is the private company that is contracted with NASA to supply the space agency with the “Dragon”, a crew transport spacecraft designed for large crew capabilities as well as deep space missions. Elon Musk, the creator of SpaceX, recently gave an interview with GQ magazine. In that interview he voiced his concerns regarding accomplishing the Mars mission in light of the fact that this world’s nations just can’t seem to grow up and stop all of this war mess.

Musk’s big dream is to colonize Mars. Considering his accomplishments, the gringa believes he can achieve his dream. I mean, just think about it: he leads a company that has managed to develop technology that can design and build rockets at a fraction of the cost as NASA. SpaceX is also the first private company, ever, in all of the world, to have launched a spacecraft into orbit and have it successfully return to Earth. SpaceX has impressed NASA so much that it is contracted to manage resupply missions to the International Space Station as well as transport the astronauts between the ISS and Earth.

Musk believes colonizing Mars is more than just a glamorous adventure. He believes this mission is critical to the ultimate survival of the human species. Considering how mankind has been consistently annihilating one another since a caveman first created a club to sock it to his romantic rival, the gringa has no trouble at all believing Musk’s worst-case scenario of a natural or man-made disaster destroying life as we know it on Earth and the survivors starting over somewhere else. Why not Mars? Musk’s philosophy can be summed up in this statement, “You back up your hard drive… Maybe we should back up life, too?”

In addition to reusable rocket technology and personnel space ferries, SpaceX is developing “Mars colonial transport architecture” to further advance toward the ultimate goal. The gringa asks, “What the heck is that?”

A critical piece of this architecture is commonly called the BFR rocket (it has a technical name but Musk and the developers refer to it as BFR). Now, the gringa likes to keep things family friendly on these blog posts, but, just so you know, BFR actually stands for Big F*#@ing Rocket. I MEAN IT! No kidding! I love that! Scientists that have a sense of humor are right up the gringa’s alley.

The BFR is a two part rocket, booster rocket + spaceship. The booster is to break through the gravity and atmosphere of Earth. Once free, the spaceship is designed to travel through deep space to Mars. The gravity of Mars is weaker than Earth’s and also has a thinner atmosphere. Because of this the spaceship does not need a rocket booster to blast off from Mars for a return trip home.

In order for Martian colonists to create a self-sustaining environment on the Red Planet, what must be done? The planet has to be terraformed to create a warmer environment that will lead to ice melts so that it becomes a “watery” planet. Then fauna can be introduced that will help to create a breathable atmosphere. Musk considers Mars to be a “fixer-upper”. The gringa likes that term.

Nuclear energy could be used to help warm the planet. By converting technology that has been used to destroy life, the fusion bomb can be repurposed into technology that creates and sustains life (now, the gringa LOVES that!). As tiny pulsing suns at each Martian pole, this technology would create a warming effect without radiation and fallout. Mars would then experience the same benefits Earth has from its proximity to the Sun.

Now, NASA is devoted not only to preserving life on the planet Earth, but any life that may possibly be present throughout the cosmos. It has a Mars directive in place forbidding any mission landing near any area containing the potential for liquid water. That is because of the possibility of the presence of bio-organisms, life, causing cross-contamination, whether those organisms are of Earth and contaminate Mars or vice versa.

The good news, as far as the colonial mission goes, is that NASA’s research has not detected any life present on Mars, even on the microscopic level. So, if it is eventually determined that no life at all exists on Mars, the moral dilemma of invading, contaminating and/or destroying it is resolved and colonization can get the green light. The only life on Mars that might exist that NASA’s current research methods are unable to detect is subterranean microbial life.

So, who would like to give the pioneering life a shot and actually become a MARTIAN?  The gringa says, “Where’s the sign up sheet?”

Now, it’s pretty clear that Musk is the type of personality that is driven. There is very little that seems to get in his way when he has set a goal. His biggest concern regarding achievement of colonizing Mars is the very real reality of war. The Earth has never seen a single day in modern history where there has not been an active war somewhere. War could be the very thing that prevents progress.

War stood in the way of progress in the early 1900’s. It was supposed to be a golden era with no more war. Then, guess what? BAM! World War I started. Then World War II. Then the Cold War. However, the Cold War eventually led to the space race, so progress did come of that mess.

How possible is it, then, for progress toward colonizing Mars be disrupted? Pretty darn possible. So, the gringa says to all the religious zealots and war profiteering warmongers everywhere, “JUST STOP IT! KNOCK IT OFF! WE ARE SICK OF IT!”

Now, I know you must be itching to see just how much more fantastic Musk’s dream can get. Well, just check out his timetable. He is determined for all of this to be accomplished within his lifetime. If Musk gets his way (and he seems very apt at always getting his way) the world could see the first boots on the ground on Mars within the next ten to fifteen years.

In fact, before the end of 2015, or early in 2016, he plans to make a big announcement regarding his Mars-colonization plan. The gringa cannot wait to hear this crazy plan because I’m a crazy gringa who is his biggest fan!

Astronauts In The Pool

Astronauts and swimming. The two don’t seem to go together, huh? Big surprise, they do! Just about any day of the week astronauts enter NASA’s Johnson Space Center, don a spacesuit and go for a swim in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL). The “laboratory” is actually a six million gallon swimming pool warmed to a constant 86 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are susceptible to vertigo, then for heaven’s sake, if you take a tour, don’t climb up on one of the cranes and look down into what is the largest indoor pool in the world.

Astronauts train for space walks in this 200 feet x 100 feet wide x 40 feet deep state of the art aquatics facility. However, they are not diving in to get their swim on. They first descend to an elevated deck that sits at a depth of twenty feet. Stage two is another twenty foot descent to the floor of the pool. This submerged laboratory contains life-size models of some of the most important components of the International Space Station (ISS). In an underwater environment that simulates microgravity, astronauts do some very serious training.

If you have ever watched NASA videos of tethered astronauts floating around in space repairing one of the eleven trusses that support the ISS’s radiator or solar arrays, this pool is where they did the training for such work. By rehearsing spacewalks in this way, astronauts become familiar with the effects microgravity will have not only upon the movements of their bodies, but also how it will affect the objects and tools they may use.

After a crew is briefed on their mission, they enter the pool and do not return until the mission is complete. This could mean remaining submerged for up to six hours. When they have received the order, and the team is assembled on deck, they are lowered into the pool by cranes. They quickly get to work practicing such routine maintenance tasks as re-routing the cables that connect the modules of the space station or repairing the solar arrays.

Now this all sounds very impressive, but, the gringa has to ask, “Is this super expensive aquatic laboratory and space station worth all of those taxpayer’s dimes? I mean, what’s the point of it all?” The gringa has an insatiable curiosity. I just have to know. Fortunately, because NASA is funded by taxpayers, their work is an open book.

Many of the ongoing biological experiments at ISS study the long term effects being in space has upon human and animal physiology. This helps prepare astronauts for their trips as well as anticipate and manage any health complications when they return home. Such research also will help to determine if it is ever possible for humans to colonize space and live out a normal life span there.

Such things as the human reproductive system are studied. I mean, what’s the point of colonizing outer space if the colonists can’t reproduce? The seed of civilization in some far off galaxy would just die out within one generation. Effects of long term exposure to microgravity upon the human immune system must also be understood. Eventually a colonist is bound to get sick or break a bone or receive a nasty cut. Which, then, leads to cosmic scientists exploring the possibilities of developing the basic building blocks that would allow self-sufficient medicine development in outer space.

Pharmaceuticals often have their origins in organic material, such as plants. ISS experiments also study the development of enclosed ecosystems. If humans are to ever live in space, they will need to find a way to successfully farm in artificial environments. These studies are not just about the future space farming of tomato crops. Astronaut scientists also explore the possibility of raising protein livestock such as fish and quail.

So, astronauts are not just up there having the most expensive camp out of their lives. They are developing the science and methods that will be needed if mankind is ever to inhabit another place as “home” other than Earth.

Does the gringa think it’s all worth it? I suppose so. I suppose I have to consider the possibility that some knucklehead leader of a country may go totally off the rails one day and trigger a catastrophe that may have a widespread impact on our world. That may be the time to just pack up and leave this world behind and head for the stars. I just hope that if that day does ever come, I’m able to bring my little dog along.
