Re-Blog: Mr. President, I Have Chosen My Side

(Originally posted 8/17/2017 on Read With The Gringa)

In response to the tragedy of an innocent American woman being murdered, live, on TV, by a neo-Nazi, our President’s response was first lukewarm, then robotic-ly obedient to a written statement crafted by others wiser than he, and then, finally, Trump’s true feelings. He declared that neo-Nazi’s are nice guys. He declared that such nice guys were only pushed to commit murder by the actions of an opposition that was doing exactly what they were doing, exercising their 1st Amendment rights.

But, Mr. President, the existence or non-existence of a permit for a rally does not matter when it comes to culpability for murder. How do the baseball bats of the opposition compare to the guns brought by white supremacist terrorists? Surely you jest. I mean, come on, remember that old saying about bringing a knife to a gun fight?

Mr. President, there was only one side that committed murder. And, in light of information gleaned from neo-Nazi websites, murder by car was not the frantic response of a startled neo-Nazi driver. For some time these terrorists have been encouraging one another online to kill protesters en masse by vehicular homicide. Chat threads exist between white supremacist terrorists trying to figure out the best plan of action to kill the most people, yet escape apprehension.

Mr. President, you are not just supporting terrorists who have killed a single American. You are supporting several organizations of white supremacy terrorists who are plotting mass murder on a wide scale, across the United States and aimed at exterminating their chosen victim classes: anyone of the opposition. Considering your most recent polling numbers, that seems to be about two-thirds of the American population. So it can then be argued that what you are supporting is a plan of genocide of the American people.

My analysis of the potential danger is not outrageous. The FBI has declared white supremacy ideology a serious domestic terror threat. Even more dangerous of a threat than ISIS. Sure, the FBI declares some radical left wing groups as terrorist as well. But it is only white supremacy terrorism that has killed more Americans than any other ideology. This based on the FBI’s decades of research, surveillance and data collection. And it has certainly killed millions across Europe (like more than 50 million). Yet you rejected the warnings from legislators and intelligence communities explaining this very serious terrorism threat from white supremacy terror cells.

Well, Mr. President, since you have declared that there are two sides to this problem, I have taken the initiative and chosen my “side”. I stand on the right side of history, rather than on the side of alt-right. I stand on the side of my grandfather’s legacy. What might that side be, Mr. President? Please allow me to clarify by first asking a few questions about the white supremacy terror legacy left to you by your father, a KKK klansman:

Who do white supremacist terrorists think they are taking their country back from? The descendants of American patriots willing to give the ultimate sacrifice as Nazi killers in World War II? Wasn’t the sacrifice of these patriots to save our nation from the un-American, anti-freedom ideology of white supremacy? Wasn’t the point of American patriot sacrifice to prevent this ideology from reaching our shores and EXTERMINATING Americans who were non-white, non-Christian, non-heterosexual, medically disabled and feminist?

Another little conundrum for you, Mr. President. You know your Russian friends? Yeah. It was with the help of Russian Communists that our patriotic American WWII veterans kicked the Nazis ass. Now isn’t that ironic. You now find yourself playing with two teams that were once enemies, and probably still are. And it seems that you have chosen the side of losers.

What was that thing you said about not respecting losers? Well, the racist base you are leaning on? Their ideology is the biggest loser of all. They lost WWII. They lost the Civil War. And they have lost you the rest of America. The majority. At least 60%.

Mr. President, there is nothing for your racist base to take back. This great country was never their’s to begin with. They tried once before in the mid 1800’s but America kicked the Confederacy’s ass then. And white supremacists got their asses kicked by the entire world less than a century later. And we can do it again now. You and your racist base cannot have the country my grandfather fought to protect. I plan to preserve his legacy of freedom for ALL. But go ahead and bring your fire. Try to take it from me if you think you can.

Is Violence Ever Justified?

Although the gringa considers herself a pacifist, I am also a realist. Do I believe in the right to react violently in self-defense? Of course. Do I believe that there are times when the pursuit of social justice requires violence? Yes, I do. Do I believe that such a strategy works? Yes, because history supports the fact that, when all else fails, when civil discourse achieves nothing, violence can, indeed, bring about a result of more peace and justice.

One such example is the passage of the Civil Rights Act. From 1776 until 1964, nearly 200 years of legalized white supremacy not only defined the nation, but also defined each individual within American society. As demands rose for equal representation, equal opportunity and equal protection, the numbers of those clamoring voices grew ever larger. Yet democracy did not prevail in a government controlled by empowered racist white men who refused to budge.

So, what happened? What changed the minds of entitled, empowered, racist white male legislators? Did the majority of them suddenly wake up one day and think to themselves, “You know, I’ve actually been wrong all my life. Non-whites truly are equal. They deserve equal protection. And who cares that by legalizing their equality my constituents will feel threatened and probably won’t re-elect me and I’ll be out of a job. I’m going to work to pass the Civil Rights Act.”

That is a fantasy. That is not what happened. And the gringa finds it very frustrating that many never stop to think about what was the catalyst for a racist, empowered, entitled, white society to suddenly flood their workplaces with non-whites they would have to compete with for employment. Why would a society enjoying all the privileges of legalized, enforced privileges in every aspect of life suddenly be willing to come down from their perches in their gilded cages, willing to sit beside those they considered to be the lower rabble? White America of 1964 did not collectively have some enlightened, social evolution epiphany. So what happened? Violence happened, that’s what happened.

April 2, 1964: 54 civil rights demonstrators from the Congress of Racial Equality picketed a Tulsa, Oklahoma restaurant and were arrested.

7.20.2a

April 22, 1964: A bi-racial group of young adults hold up subways and trains on the opening day of the New York World’s Fair. Many were arrested.

7.20.2b

May 12, 1964: Cambridge, Maryland calls in the National Guard to bring order to a riot that began when white racists responded violently to a bi-racial civil rights march and prayer vigil.

7.20.2c

June 26, 1964: Florida Governor orders extra police to bring to heel the race riots ripping apart the historical city of St. Augustine. Racist whites turned violent after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a peaceful civil rights march.

7.20.2d.jpg

June 29, 1964: FBI discovers the remains of 3 civil rights workers who disappeared June 21 in Mississippi while working in the “Freedom Summer” program. They had been abducted, murdered and buried in an earthen dam by the KKK.

7.20.2ee

7.20.2e

July 2, 1964: After nearly three years of civil unrest that culminated in a widely publicized recovery of those murdered by the Klan, finally the wheel of government turned. Three days after the bodies of civil rights workers were recovered who had been murdered by the KKK, President Lyndon Baines Johnson finished what assassinated President John Fitzgerald Kennedy had started and signed the Civil Rights Act into law.

7.20.2f

What can our nation learn from this history? It should learn that terrorists who comprise race hate groups like the KKK and the re-branded KKK, the alt-right, are dangerous. They are terrorists and murderers. Although our nation does not protect the free speech of ISIS recruiters, for some insane reason, most municipalities grant public rally permits and authorize police protection for the public recruitment and incitement rallies of white supremacist terrorists.

There is no doubt that radical right wing race hate extremists are terrorists. The FBI has been investigating and infiltrating them for decades. They have documented their thousands upon thousands acts of terror: murder, rape, arson, bank robberies, bombings, kidnappings, etc. They classify radical right wing race hate extremists as the most serious domestic terror threat confronting the US. More serious than ISIS and responsible for more dead Americans than any other ideology.

Considering, then, the heinous nature that radical right wing race ideology takes when it truly feels its empowerment threatened, who in their right mind truly believes it will not take violence to stop them? So, when critics attack the tactics of anti-fascist groups who actively resist and fight violent race hate tactics with their own violence, the gringa accepts this. I will not criticize this.

It took American integrationists of all races working together and provoking racist American society to bring about the result of the passage of the Civil Rights Act. Yet the Civil Rights Act is not yet complete. So long as race hate terrorists are permitted to thrive in organized cells, enjoying a protection the nation does not give to other terrorist organizations, the US has not lived up to its obligation of enacting the spirit of the Civil Rights Act to its fullness. And don’t be foolish enough to think that 50 years of legalized equality has undone the work of nearly 200 years of legalized white supremacy.

As far as the gringa is concerned, Antifa is the conscience of the nation rearing its ugly head. How the nation responds will determine whether or not we will finally exterminate race hate terrorists from our population once and for all. Why should the US be exempt from such a thing? The world expected it of Germany after World War II. And the German people rose to the occasion with nobility and courage, stamping out the shame of Nazism one generation after another. Shouldn’t the US not hold itself to the same standard? Should it not also stamp out the very terror ideology that has murdered more Americans than any other?

It is the responsibility of local law enforcement to ensure that their citizenry live in an environment of safety and security. When municipalities grant public speaking permits for race hate recruiters and authorize law enforcement protection by officers who are paid by the very tax payers threatened by the ideology these officers are duty-bound and ordered to protect, what message does that send to their local communities? It sends the message that for those who live in such a community who happen to be a minority or a non-racist white, you had better beware because your local government and law enforcement provide aid and comfort to race hate terrorists.

When such a thing happens it is indeed time for a revolution. A terrorist is a terrorist regardless of skin color. And the only way to rid a community of terrorists of any kind is to give them no quarter whatsoever. And if they continue to push their terror agendas, actively recruiting from among your neighbors and children, if push comes to shove, it may take violence to excise such a cancer from among you. And such action is not terrorism or hypocrisy. It is self-preservation of your way of life. In many cases, it is justice.

When victims of decades, even centuries of oppression and organized legal terrorism can get no relief or justice, do you honestly expect nothing to happen? Remember, the Civil Rights Act only passed because enough people got so fed up and became so disruptive that it was in the interest of national security to finally give the people what they demanded regardless of the fact that white male American legislators were, for the most part, conditioned to be rabid racists since birth.

Do people really believe that law enforcement should not be held to the same standard as citizens? Are they not citizens themselves? Citizens who took an oath to serve and protect their fellow citizens? Yet they can be videotaped committing obvious acts of murder and walk away from a courtroom with their freedom, and sometimes their jobs, intact.

When this happens, American society should expect that there will be hell to pay. Especially when one considers that the FBI has already reported in 2006 that white supremacist terrorists have effectively infiltrated US law enforcement on all levels. Yet this news has been virtually swept under the nation’s proverbial rug.

As grieving mothers, fathers, spouses, children, siblings and communities become overwhelmed with grief without relief and communities realize that each and every one of them are unsafe in the presence of law enforcement, what the hell does this country honestly expect? The gringa will tell you what to expect.

Expect a response of graduated escalation for demands of justice. Expect prayer vigils that give way to peace marches. When those are unheard, expect peace marches to give way to sit-ins. When nothing happens, expect sit-ins to give way to noisy protests with bullhorns. When this is ignored, expect noisy protests to bring about clashes with race haters trying to silence the voice of the victims. When race haters are given public sympathy and support, expect, eventually, riots.

When there is no justice to be found in a nation that is responsible for thousands of non-whites lynched and tortured and raped and driven from their homes and business, do not expect minorities to stand idly and quietly by and be lynched by the barrel of a racist cop’s gun. Do not expect them to sit quietly and idly by while the murderers of their ancestors march with police protection through the streets where they live and their children go to school.

And for those who would criticize matching violence for violence, the gringa says, “Grow up.” Get out of your privileged la la land because when cries for justice are ignored long enough and loved ones are watching those they love dying and suffering because of ignored justice, then a fist, a rock or a molotav cocktail becomes justice. Respond to the soft cry for justice. For if you don’t, your nation may find itself responding to a riotous demand for justice.

Do NOT tolerate your local municipality granting ANY permit for public speaking by a race hate terror group. Terrorists ARE NOT entitled to First Amendment protection. They are TERRORISTS and a danger to your community. They are a danger to your children. Your municipal government and local law enforcement are supposed to be protecting YOU from them, NOT protecting the terrorists from you as they openly and actively recruit in your neighborhood.

If your neighborhood wants to hear an inspiring speech or rally cry that will make this nation great, reject white race hate recruitment rallies. Demand, instead, that your municipality provide an open, outdoor theater screening of a speech like this:

Wake up. Resist. Revolt.

Mexico’s Best & Finest

(Originally posted 3/16/17 on Read With The Gringa).

With Trump’s constant drip, drip, drip, denigrating Mexico and Mexicans at every turn, the gringa has to ask, “Did a Mexican chica break his heart when he was 12-years-old or something?” Such bitterness must have a very deep root indeed. Surely, somewhere in his dark, murky past, Trump must have experienced a horrible humiliation at the hands of a Mexican. Maybe, if a chica did break his heart, maybe, just maybe, she had a big hermano who also beat him up for getting fresh with his sister. Who knows. What the gringa DOES know is that Trump is full of crap about Mexico not producing the best or finest when it comes to their people. Get a load of these amazing Mexicans and their inventions:

Luis Miramontes:  In 1956 Miramontes was the proud co-owner of a US patent for the oral contraceptive known as Norinyl and manufactured by his employer, Syntex Corporation. A college student at the time, Miramontes, along with 2 other chemists, invented the birth control pill in 1951. His primary contribution was drafting the procedure for synthesizing progestin norethindrone (seeing as how experts claim he speaks on the level of a fourth grader, the gringa suspects Trump couldn’t even pronounce that).

Victor Celorio: Do you like to read on a Nook or Kindle? Well, guess what, this technology is nearly half a century old. It is based on the invention of this Mexican technology innovator who patented his “Instabook Maker”. This allowed for rapid electronic distribution of books and allowed for offline printing. US patents #6012890 and #6213703 were both awarded to Celorio, a Mexico City native, in 1957. This technology was behind the success for his US company, Instabook Corporation. The gringa doesn’t expect Trump to be impressed by this invention. Chances are, he doesn’t read much.

Jose Hernandez-Rebollar: This Mexican’s invention is so famous, he even earned mention by the Smithsonian. Commenting on his device, a glove that translates sign language into audible speech, the Smithsonian had this to say:

“… by using sensors attached to the glove and the arm, this prototype device can currently translate the alphabet and over 300 words in American Sign Language (ASL) into both English and Spanish.”

This bilingual device is very impressive. Seeing as how Trump barely has a grasp on English at even the most rudimentary levels, the gringa thinks Hernandez-Rebollar far surpasses Trump in that respect. I mean, really, what the heck is he trying to say? Either he can’t say “big league” or he’s making up words because “bigly” isn’t even a word.

Dr. Maria del Socorro Flores Gonzalez: In 2006 she won an award, MEXWII, for her extraordinary medical diagnostic method for the parasitic disease, invasive amebiasis. Her process is patented and because of her commitment to healthcare, early detection is now possible for a disease that was killing more than 100,000 people around the world every year. The gringa wonders how many lives Trump will save this year, because he is certainly going to destroy countless.

Felipe Vadillo: Since Trump is a fierce advocate for forced birth, desiring to outlaw abortion and banning American medical professionals from sharing medical data about abortion options with vulnerable populations in other parts of the world, perhaps he should give Vadillo the credit he deserves. Vadillo invented a method, which is now patented, for predicting premature fetal membrane rupture in expectant mothers. This condition is commonly known as when a pregnant woman’s “water breaks”. If it happens prematurely, the consequences can be deadly for the baby. Pro-life Trump should offer a word of gratitude for this outstanding Mexican.

And then, there’s this 4th grader President…

Soil, Water & Pure Air

(Originally posted 3/7/17 on Read With The Gringa)

The gringa proudly considers herself a treehugger. As a female treehugger, I can count myself among legendary treehugging heroes. Have you ever heard about the the Chipko movement? It is a group of women from India who have been protecting the forests of their native country from deforestation since the 1970s. They link their efforts to an ancient Indian legend about a courageous young girl named Amrita Devi. First, the gringa will tell the dear readers the legend and then you’ll find out about the Chipkos.

Long, long ago, before there was Internet, a Maharajah sent his tree cutters to chop down the trees surrounding a small village. He must have needed lots of furniture, houdahs (saddles for elephants), and firewood. Amrita knew that her family, including her old, beloved grandmother, would die from hunger and cold if they had no firewood. She rushed out and wrapped her arms around a tree, refusing to let the woodcutters chop it down.

Now, here is where the story really gets interesting. If you have a person like the gringa telling the story, you hear a fantastic ending where Amrita prevails, saves the forest and is rewarded by the Maharaja for her bravery, wisdom and loyalty to family. However, if the caveman gets to butt in and tell the ending, he will say that Amrita got her head chopped off by the woodcutters axe when they went ahead and felled the tree. But, she became a martyr and her village revolted and refused to let any more trees get cut down, setting aside a lovely little grove in her honor where her body and head were buried. The dear reader can pick their own ending.

As for the Chipko, regardless of the ending of the story, they are still inspired by Amrita’s story. In the 1970s these rural village gals made their own brave stand and took their place in history and created a lasting legacy. You see, in the 1960s India was blazing a trail of economic development that meant massive deforestation that the government called progress. Although burgeoning city and industrial growth may have been welcomed by many, for those whose lives were wrapped up in the harmony of life in the forests, subsisting on the crops they planted and the natural resources that surrounded them, such progress was devastating.

For rural communities progress meant crops were ruined, homes torn down, erosion destroyed farmland and flooding ensued. Basically, as centuries-old Himalayan forests were cut down, the culture and and environment supported by these forests disentegrated. Many of these villagers pushed further up mountainsides looking for fuel, water, clearings to plant crops, and materials to construct new homes.

Finally, like most strong women, many of these matriarchs had had enough. They began engaging in “Chipko”. This is a Hindi word which means “to cling to”. The Chipkos would literally hug trees, refusing to let go so they could be chopped down. The official origins of this method of protest is recorded in a 1973 incident. A contractor had been dispatched to bring down 3,000 trees that were allotted for construction of a sporting goods store. Much of the surrounding area was already barren from prior deforestation efforts.

When the woodcutters arrived, women began sounding the alarm throughout the village. The gal who was considered their leader was a widow in her 50s. She mustered 27 other women to her side and they rushed out to face off with the woodcutters. At first their brave leader tried to plead with the contractor. Then she attempted to reason with him and educate him on the consequences of deforestation. The response was insult and abuse from the contractor and his crew.

The women channeled their inner Amritas and flung their arms around the trees and vowed to die before letting go. The men were so taken aback by their actions they surrendered their efforts and returned to the sporting goods jobsite empty-handed. So much for sneakers for everyone!

As the movement proved effective, it grew. New ideas were also integrated into the Chipko’s practices. A cultural practice that symbolized brother-sister relationships was put to good use, tying sacred threads around trees marked with the wood-choppers symbol for its future fate. Crewmen would understand those threads as meaning Chipkos were willing to die on behalf of that tree.

In 1987 the Chipko movement was honored with what might be considered by many a recognition as meaningful as a Nobel Peace Prize. For being a small women’s movement with the purpose of saving trees, the women were given the “Right to Livelihood Award” honoring the many moratoriums and battles won to save a precious natural resource.

The gringa will close with a Chipko folk song:

The contractor says, “You foolish women, do you know what these forest bear?Resin, timber, and therefore foreign exchange!”

The women answer, “Yes, we know. What do these forests bear?Soil, water, and pure air. Soil, water, and pure air.”

Who Is A Dissident?

The current political climate in the U.S., as well as many other countries throughout the world, has had the gringa interested in what exactly is a political dissident. Considering how some of the gringa’s ideologies, beliefs and personal life missions are diametrically opposed to all things Trump, as well as the gringa’s big, fat mouth, is it plausible to think that the gringa is a dissident? What happens to dissidents? Will I end up in a Trumpian gulag? Well, the gringa is not a fortune-teller. So, lacking the skill to predict the future, the next best thing is to form a conclusion based on what has happened in the past. Let’s take a stroll down memory lane of dissident history:

Definition of a dissident: A person who opposes official policy, especially if within an authoritarian state.

Yep, sounds like the gringa is a dissident. And who are my most illustrious partners in crime?

Ancient Dissidents: Apparently, dissidents are nothing new under the sun for the civilized world. Ancient world history is rife with famous dissidents. For these well-known names, no explanation is necessary for the work they did to turn the world upside down and inside out.

  • Jesus
  • Socrates
  • Buddha
  • Confucious
  • Leonardo da Vinci

Modern Era Dissidents: Regardless of where you live on this magnificent planet we all call home, you probably have a native-born dissident that will make you proud.

  • Argentina: Jacobo Timerman, although born in Soviet era Russia, was actually an Argentinian of Jewish descent. As an author, journalist and publisher he was a thorn in the side of the regime in Argentina of the 1970s responsible for what is known as the Dirty War. He was arrested, tossed in the clink and tortured by the government of Argentina who didn’t appreciate Timerman exposing their dirty, little secrets.

  • Azerbaijan: Elnur Majidli is an Internet activist promoting the principals of democracy. He blogs and organizes from self-imposed exile in France. Considering that his native government has accused him of attempting a violent overthrow of the powers that be during the Arab Spring of 2011, seems he won’t be going home anytime soon. Although criminal charges against him were dropped in the summer of 2011, the gringa thinks he should play it safe and remain in France!
  • Bulgaria: The 70s were turbulent times in many places. In Bulgaria, communism held sway with a regime known for its oppression and brutality. So brutal, in fact, that writer Georgi Ivanov Markov was assassinated by one of the favorite methods of Communist Eastern Europe despots, poison. Markov was an active journalist known for outspoken diatribes against Bulgaria’s communist regime. Defecting to the UK would not protect him from Bulgaria’s retribution. An assassin fired a micro-sized pellet of ricin into his leg from an umbrella as they both strolled down London’s streets.
  • South Africa: The gringa feels no need to elaborate on this nation’s most famous dissident, Nelson Mandela. Although he eventually liberated his country, it came at the cost of decades of imprisonment and years of torture and deprivation.

The gringa watches as what can only become terrible history for her nation unfold around her. Certainly she joins the ranks of dissidents. There is no doubt that authoritarianism is an apt descriptor for the current administration. Should resistance prove unsuccessful at changing the mad course embarked upon by the US government, the slide into brutal oppression will most likely be rapid.

For those who remain outspoken and open about their resistance, there may be prisons especially erected, just for us. Guards will probably be trained in unique methods of enforcement and information extraction, just for us. New rules will be created to manage those who remain on the outside, special social governance, just for us. Although the US has historically divided the population into groups of “others” defined by gender, sexual preferences, ethnicity and religion, those divisional lines will become blurred as a new citizen class is created, just for us. So, if the gringa suddenly disappears, check out the new dissident prisons I expect will be springing up. Maybe you can get on the visitor’s list!

Moth Superpowers

(It’s a personal, political rant and lengthy. If the dear reader takes the time to read it, the gringa thanks you.)

Usually the gringa likes to pen a post about cool science, fringe science or some obscure historical event of curious significance. Although I often throw shadows of my personal opinions in the posts, for the most part I like to stick to the facts as much as possible. However, dear reader, I simply must unload. Please indulge me.

For those of you who missed my past post, “I Am Fourth Generation KKK,” well, now you know. The gringa is fourth generation KKK and a heretic to white supremacy ideology. I am also anathema to the majority of my family. Although there were some ties that I clung to with the highest hopes for longer than I should have but, a girl’s gotta have hope, right?

So, the first time I experienced my superpower as a moth, the ability to spin a chrysalis and emerge a new creature was when I set out on my own at 17-years-old. My college years were filled with enthusiastic self-examination, often re-crimination, and the cutting and hewing away of the most obvious elements of my white superiority complex. My relationship with my father was the first casualty of my moth transformational superpowers.

Then I married and had a baby. My focus was diverted from my social and personal flaws to my spiritual ones. In case most dear readers have overlooked this particular tidbit, the majority of white supremacists and white nationalists ascribe to the Christian religion. Usually some form of fundamental evangelical bent. As my marriage progressed and my baby grew, I became incensed at certain doctrines I had always believed yet never fully comprehended because they had never directly affected me.

When faced with having to believe that my innocent babe was a sinner and beating him with a rod was going to fix the problem, um, the gringa did the only thing she could. She rebelled. When my (now ex) husband complained about my rebellion, came home and reported that the pastor instructed him to “take away my phone, the television and car keys,” he informed the gringa that he had told the pastor, “YOU come over and take those things away from her.” Yes. The gringa had a bit of a temper. My ex-husband who stood well over six-feet-tall and was a cop with a gun preferred not to rile me.

So the pastor took it as his personal mission from God to save the entire congregation from the influence of a rebellious woman. The pastor informed me I was practicing witchcraft because that is what rebellion is. He claimed the bible said so. He also told me to stop all this talk of the love of God or people would use it as an excuse to sin. They should fear God. The bible says so.

So, the gringa said “Good-bye lunatic Christians. I don’t like your mean ol’ God.” I then went down the street to the local synagogue. They were happy to have me. I studied with them for about 5 years, enveloped in a new, religious chrysalis, for a lengthy metamorphasis. My new religious family told me I could never be “a” Jew because that is biological. I could be Jew-“ish” because that was about living a religious lifestyle. So, the gringa became Jew-“ish” through her moth superpowers. At least, in some ways, for many, many years. It was comfortable.

My relationship with three sisters became the next casualties of the gringa’s moth superpowers. They explained that not only was I condemned to hell for all eternity, but that I would be an influence of heresy so could not be tolerated. Although they did not have the nerve to say this to my ill-tempered face. They had to send a message through our dear, old mother whom the gringa clung to fiercely, finding all sorts of ways to apologize and justify for her obvious faults and flaws.

And there I sat, complacent and happy for about 15 years. Then, ye aulde familial roots of KKK raised their nasty tendrils. That one relationship that had remained so important to me that I was willing to overlook a nasty ideology in order to not completely be an orphan became a source of some of the greatest pain the gringa has ever endured. Five years ago a daughter exercised her moth superpowers once again, spun a chrysalis and emerged an orphan with a living mother.

You see, a mother, steeped in fundamental evangelicalism, conditioned to be a racist as third generation KKK, and trained to be incredibly polite as a southern lady should be as she exercised her self-righteousness and racism, became sick in her old age. The gringa quit her job and she and the caveman moved in with dear, old mom to care for her. The gringa’s three other sisters resented this but not enough to sacrifice their own incomes like the gringa in order to do the thankless job of wiping their mother’s behind. And the first week dear, old mom was recovering at home, the three sisters launched their plan to make certain that the family wealth stayed right where it should. Having a Jew-ish sister in an inter-racial marriage getting close to mom was a terrible threat to the family legacy remaining with the white folk.

Soon dear, old mother became convinced that my epilepsy made me dangerous. I was brain damaged. I simply couldn’t be trusted. I exercised poor judgment. Just look at how I had rejected the church and married outside my race. The gringa endured two years of torment trying to believe that the threats of lawsuits and other destructive goings on had nothing to do with my mother. But eventually I had to accept an incredibly ugly and painful truth. So I spun my chrysalis and became an orphan who grieves every day the loss of parents who are still living. Every day the loss of relationship with living parents is like experiencing their death all over again.

Once I got over my most abject depression at the loss of my mother and had recovered physically from the toll the stress had taken on my health, I once again emerged from my cocoon a re-created self. I was stronger, more confident and, despite my feelings of loss, I felt a sense of freedom I had never before experienced.

Again, I launched into self-examination, lopping off bits here and grafting on new stuff there. My oldest daughter converted to Islam. My oldest son rejected all religion. I was immersed almost every day in some of the most profound discussions of religion, politics and history that I had ever had and with two of the people that I love and trust the most. I got a new religion. It’s called kindness. I adopted a new political party. It’s called fairness. Life became so much clearer. Surely it would be smooth sailing from here to the old folks home. Then Trump happened.

I had never before engaged much in politics. I found that neither party ever really represented all of me. They also seemed to be not much different than one another in governing styles. All that pointing out of one being a better choice than the other was just campaign tactics. When they actually wielded power, they pretty much did the same things.

But Trump was a horse of a different color. Trump awakened all the racist language and training and conditioning of the gringa’s past. I heard my father’s voice. I saw my mother’s manipulations. I experienced the effects of propaganda I had seen used throughout my childhood. The gringa was incensed. How could this be going on out in the open like this? How could there be so many Americans who find this appealing? How can so many Americans be in denial about what this really is and the dangers it poses? How can so many of my fellow countryman not give a damn about how such beliefs could hurt a fellow American or guest to our country? Isn’t this 2017? Haven’t we grown past this? Aren’t we better than this? Isn’t much of this mess national flaws that we have already corrected? Shouldn’t we be much farther down the road of progress?

The gringa cast off such disappointment and cast on a new persona once again thanks to my amazing moth superpowers. I threw myself wholeheartedly into the political process. I was an activist. Tied to my home as I eked out a living pecking away at the keyboard, as well as my epilepsy often preventing me from driving or venturing out alone, I devoted myself to a political purpose as a keyboard warrior. I was ruthless and relentless. Social media, emails, articles, letters to congressmen, etc., etc. Then Trump got elected.

Shock is the only word to describe how this felt. And there was no time to recover from the shock. Every. Single. Day. After his election was yet one more threatening action from his corner. The gringa broke out the smelling salts, put on her big girl panties, and renewed her vigor to RESIST. Oh yes, much to the caveman’s chagrin, the gringa joined the resistance any way, shape or form that was possible. The caveman ignored me, refused the drama and sometimes got mad at me. He worried and we argued.

You see, he lived in Peru during their revolution after a military coup. He had an uncle and cousin who were attorneys that served the ousted president. And they got assassinated by the new regime. He had seen all of this before in a different place and time. The caveman was afraid for the gringa. And he had every right to feel that way.

The gringa received numerous death threats from white supremacists and white nationalists. They all had ingenious ways to make me pay for my attempts to expose the Trump administration as a white nationalist terror regime. What was it the gringa did that made them so angry?

  1. On social media, at every opportunity, I posted a link to an FBI terror report that classifies white supremacy and white nationalist ideologies as terrorism .
  1. I pointed out that the FBI also classifies these terror ideologies at a threat level of “serious” to anyone who would listen.
  1. I point out as often as possible that Trump’s chief strategist, head of the national security council, and drafter of White House policy is a white nationalist terrorist, Steve Bannon. He is also a proud Leninist who has publicly stated that his ultimate political goals are the destruction of nations like the U.S.
  1. I reject any defense of Bannon as a terrorist when radical right wing terror sympathizers point out that he has never committed a brutal act. I explain that the most dangerous white nationalist terrorists are the recruiters and propagandists that create the terrorist killers.
  1. I remind the public in any venue that Trump has appointed multiple white nationalist terrorists to his administration.
  1. I insist to every journalist or media outlet, as well as to law enforcement who provide security at rallies and City Halls who issue permits to groups for public protest events, that such terrorists deserve no First Amendment protection (and certainly not a job in the White House) because there is NO peaceful co-existence with ideologies that require acts of terror in order to achieve their goals. After all, we wouldn’t give permits to ISIS to hold a public rally, would we? Law enforcement personnel would not expect to have to protect ISIS terrorists as they publicly proclaimed their ideology?

    7. I offer as the latest proof of the dangers of Bannon’s type of terror propaganda the fact that, as CEO of Breitbart, a right wing radicalization propaganda tool, Bannon oversaw the development of its propaganda. Propaganda that was a preferred news source for Canadian Bissonnette who was successfully radicalized and perpetrated mass murder upon a congregation of peaceful Muslims as the prayed in there mosque just days ago.

    8. I ask the media to demand answers from the White House if this same propaganda is being used upon the American people (but I already know that answer).

Because of my actions there are those who would prefer that the gringa be raped in front of her family, have her children murdered before her eyes, lop off her head and hang it from a highway overpass, or have her home blown to bits with a bomb. Funny how so many folks are so afraid of brown people doing such things when history makes it plain as day that the majority of these terrible things have been perpetrated by white supremacy and white nationalist terrorists in American and against Americans. It wasn’t the Mexicans or the Muslims who have killed more Americans with acts of terror. It is white American right-wing radicals (who are often radicalized Christians) who have murdered more Americans than any other terrorist group. And the legislators who are encouraging us to march in the streets refuse to tell this truth.

After participating in only a week’s worth of resistance the gringa must announce that she is tired. Yes, I’m tired. The caveman actually went with me to a rally despite his personal baggage that makes him afraid of things like that. I came home and pondered over many, many things. I decided I am tired.

There is not a single, honest person anywhere on Earth that is deceiving themselves about the nature of Trump’s administration. Even those attempting to defend Trump, the gringa believes that they are fully aware that they are fooling no one and are simply parroting a script because anything else is just too complicated. The gringa knows this because the gringa knows that change is hard. To achieve change one must first wrestle with the demons of unpleasant truth. And there are plenty of people who don’t have the courage or stamina to do that. So Trump supporters lie to themselves that his administration is not a white nationalist terror regime. But deep inside they know they are lying.

So, despite so many Americans, civilians, journalists, legislators, being fully aware of what is going on and the inspiration behind it, not a single person with the kind of influence and power that matters has had the courage to step forward and boldly say in plain English that the Trump administration is a white nationalist terror regime. Even the leaders of the European Union had the courage to imply this by announcing that the US is now an existential threat to Europe, lumping the country with the likes of ISIS, Russia and China. But the most important people in America banging the gong for the masses to resist still cannot bring themselves to courageously point the finger at the White House and proclaim that a terror regime is installed there.

The gringa can’t count the number of hours she spent drafting missives to legislators, governors, mayors, news agencies and journalists asking them to ask these questions:

  1. Why do terrorists have jobs in the White House?
  1. Why are white nationalists classified by the FBI as terrorists yet are given jobs in Trump’s administration?
  1. Why are terrorists listed as a serious domestic terror threat given clearance to work in the White House?
  1. How is it that Bannon, a self-proclaimed ascriber to white nationalist terror ideology, got clearance to work in the White House and draft Executive Orders?
  1.  How is it that Bannon, a terrorist, is able to have clearance to be head of the National Security Council?
  1.  Why is it that the man who was the leadership under which master propaganda was crafted that has been a tool in the radicalization of white nationalist terrorists, inspiring many to mass murder like Bissonnette, the Canadian mosque murderer, why is such a propagandist shaping government policy for a U.S presidential administration?
  1.  Is this terrorist using the same terrorist propaganda techniques on the American people?

And the gringa has got a big, fat nothing. NO ONE who has any influence or power is willing to touch this. So, as the gringa looks around proudly at the masses of American people standing up with courage as our nation’s resistance to a white nationalist terror regime, the gringa is also saddened. Citizens cannot do this all on our own.

We need the media to do its job, not become enablers of terrorist propaganda. By reporting fluff and exploitive pieces yet refusing to deal with the elephant in the room, the media thinks they can have a clear conscience. They think that they can point out all the critical reports they did on Trump. But the gringa points out that they were never willing to deliver the literary death blow of the hard, stone-cold truth. They were too afraid.

Because the gringa can tell you, white supremacist and white nationalist terrorists are very scary people. They are well organized. They are educated. They have effective leadership. They are well armed. They know how to make bombs. And they know how to kill people and get away with it. But that’s no excuse to not do your job.

And what about all of these legislators? Why are they not heralding the words of their own intelligence agency? Why do they not put that terror report front and center in their attacks on the Trump administration, “The Terrorist Threat Confronting The United States”? Why didn’t Hillary during the campaign? Why are legislators who proclaim to be champions of civil rights protection so loathe to confront the ugly national legacy of white supremacy ideology and admit where it has led us? To governance by terrorists.

If these progressives and liberals in Congress do not have the stones to risk the danger of deposing a white nationalist terrorist from the seat of the presidency, then this country will not stand. The nation will fall. It will fall from the ensuing chaos of a white nationalist terror regime ripping apart a diverse population that, by and large, DOES co-exist peacefully.

This terror regime will come after us one group at a time, singling one group out, isolating it from the others for mistreatment, like the Muslims. At the same time it will ingratiate itself to another minority group in order to gain sympathy and confidence, like Trump’s announcement to continue legal protections of the LGBT community. This is to create a false sense of confidence and divide the population in order to prevent a united front of ALL Americans resisting together. After all, he can’t really be a terrorist if he’s doing good things for LGBT. He’s only trying to protect the nation when he focuses on the Muslims. Right? That’s the logic? Are we really going to fall for the good guy/bad guy routine?

When are the most powerful and influential people going to be brutally honest and quit pussy-footing around? There is NO TIME. Look at what has happened in ONE SHORT WEEK! If our country’s leaders who have the power and influence to change the course we are headed do not pick up their balls in their hands and do it, Americans like myself, who are full of beans right now to take up the cause, will walk away with disgust.

I will not give the fruits of my labor to a nation who betrays me and my family and neighbors. I listen to the Senators and Representatives of the Democrat party cast their rabble-rousing cries to the wind, encouraging us to stand together and RESIST. Yet they are failing to do their part – deliver the political coup de gras by using the intelligence documents that expose terrorists in the White House.

The gringa is tired. The superpowers of this moth for transformation are not limitless. I am not prepared to transform, yet again, into an oppressed class of American, prohibited from honest criticism of a president, and perpetually engaged in defending the most basic of human rights for my fellow countrymen who are targeted for oppression and discrimination because of their race, skin color, language, religion or gender identity. Why should these political leaders and journalists, in their ivory towers, expect the American people to make such public and disruptive sacrifices that paint a target on their backs for a retaliatory regime and they themselves are not willing to risk anything by telling the ugly truth of it all?

The gringa is having  a very difficult time finding a single leader to rally behind because she finds them all more cowardly than herself. I am looking for a HERO. The American people in this resistance cannot maintain this momentum without effective leadership. And I am disgusted that it has all come to this. Again, we are right back where the country was in the 1960s, fighting over the most obvious of what is right and wrong where humanity is concerned. The gringa is so damn tired of this damn country. The jungles of Peru have never looked so inviting.

The gringa’s superpower as a human moth, spinning chrysalis after chrysalis and emerging a new creature is running low on steam and after only a SINGLE WEEK of this crap. I don’t want to have to use my dwindling superpower reserves to transform into a political activist. I was hoping for the quiet life of an eccentric recluse artist. And yet, finding a place to hide is only temporary for, if there is no peace and safety for a soul to find in this great country, where on Earth can such peace and safety be found in perpetuity? If they come for one here in the good, ol’ U.S. of A, they eventually come for us all no matter what corners of the earth we are hiding in and no matter how damn tired we are.

Praising Mistakes Of The Past Is Insanity

(Originally posted 1/12/17 on Read With The Gringa)

The gringa wants to conclude her studies on the history of U.S. immigration by examining a particular policy that was enacted by President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s administration in 1954. The incoming Trump administration has threatened a revival of a deportation policy that has already proven disastrous. Again, if the definition of insanity is doing the same thing, over and over, yet expecting different results, is the incoming group of politicians all insane? Is a madman about to take the helm of U.S. government? Will the lunatics be running the asylum in less than two weeks? Let’s take a look at Operation Wetback and see if parallels of this policy should be supported or resisted if Trump attempts to resurrect this dead beast.

After World War I, the nation was hurting for cheap labor, particularly in agriculture. They hoped to fill this void by exploiting imported labor groups from Mexico. As non-citizens, such groups could successfully be exploited because they would not have political representation, other than any interest that their country of origin might have.

However, we learned through the Bracero Program of 1942, that Mexico’s government was also exploiting its own people who participated.  Legal Bracero’s were subject to withholdings from their earnings being kept by the U.S. and Mexico to pay for certain provisions of their Bracero work-visas. Provisions that should have provided benefits but both governments simply kept the money. This resulted in the U.S. not seeing the numbers needed of voluntary migrant workers participating. The gringa doesn’t blame Mexicans for rejecting participation in the program.

But industry will always find a way to meet its own need. Workers who need to make a buck will always find a way around government over-reach into their pocket. The result was that illegal immigration increased and farmers were only too happy to employ them. And, for a time, the US looked the other way while it was convenient and the citizens were satisfied with cheap produce abundantly supplied to their local markets.

But, in the early 1950’s Americans were tiring of being so tolerant to illegal immigrants who were picking those beans they enjoyed with dinner. Eisenhower satisfied their indignation with Operation Wetback. Deportation records indicate that more than one million immigrants were removed from the country. Now, considering that a racial slur was used in an official government record entitled deportation legislation, there is no doubt in the gringa’s mind that this piece of work was racially motivated and wholly approved by a racist white majority population. For shame, America.

But that’s how elitist white majority capitalism works. Exploit without a conscience those with melanin as cheap labor. Then, when your done with them, demonize them and kick them out, even if it means destroying their lives and families.

Once the announcement was made June 9, 1954, that this was the official policy of the U.S., aggressive raids and deportation forces focused their attention on Arizona and California. Law enforcement used methods like roadblocks and checkpoints. Eventually these methods spilled over into Texas as well. Sweeps even reached as far as the states of Washington, Illinois, Kansas and Missouri. Within a couple of months the operation wound down and then, once funding ran out, the government proudly announced that the “problem no longer existed”. Yeah, right. Government officials just didn’t want to admit that no matter how many people they deport, there is really no way to secure a border like the US southern border. It is extensive, porous, and rugged. Trump thinks a wall will work? He must have never heard about the ingenuity of drug smuggling tunnels.

Now, to an American Nationalist, Operation Wetback sounds like a prime example of how to deal with undocumented aliens that are in the country. Well, the gringa says, “Not so fast.” Before you accept your initial knee-jerk reaction, get down to the nitty-gritty, the nuts and bolts, the actual “what exactly happens” kind of stuff.

Currently, there are well over 12 million people in the US with undocumented status. Many of these people enjoy this status through no fault of their own. How many unscrupulous immigration attorneys do you think have taken advantage of vulnerable immigrants, taking their money and never doing a thing to manage their legal paperwork properly? Yeah, that’s a problem. That’s a problem with AMERICAN criminals, not immigrant criminals. Then you have people who have fled their native countries in terror, arrived here undocumented and have the right to apply for refugee status or asylum. In their desperation to get out alive during dangerous internal strife, there is simply no time to secure documents. Proper channels to do such a thing may not even exist. Even if they did, the very people being victimized by their government and needing to escape are also the last people such a government would grant travel documents to. Those are the kind of people our country EXPECTS to arrive undocumented. And how many immigrants do you think have been committed to maintaining a legal status only to fall victim to overcrowded immigration courts who have let their case fall through the cracks? The reality is that such things happen. Sometimes, it’s the US that is to blame.

For all of these reasons, undocumented immigrants have the right of due process as every other citizen and legal immigrant. And if you think we should just forego due process, then you are saying that we should just do away with the foundations of the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights. The rights of undocumented immigrants are all wrapped up in the very logic and reason behind how every human being enjoys inalienable and civil rights in the US. Are you willing to put your own liberty, freedom and security at risk simply because you have a problem with immigrants?

What kind of country do you really want to live in? Do you really want to live in a country where you have your drive to work interrupted by roadblocks, searches of your car and demands to see your documents? So, you say, “No big deal if you are a citizen.” Once again, the gringa says, “Not so fast.” There’s this little thing called the Civil Rights Act. Think about how roadblocks and ID demands could infringe upon the equal protection of minorities. Take this scenario for example:

The gringa and her caveman are driving separate cars home after picking one up at the repair shop. The gringa reaches the roadblock only to realize that she forgot her ID at home. The cop looks at her white skin, hears her flawless English, albeit with a Texas twang, and waves her on through. Right behind her is the caveman, a US citizen for more than a quarter of a century. He realizes his wallet is in his wife’s handbag because he always wears pocket-less soccer shorts and refuses to carry a man-purse. The cop sees his brown skin and hears that Peruvian accent and then orders him to get out of the vehicle. The car is impounded and the caveman heads downtown, detained for further questioning.

If the caveman is lucky, the gringa will bring his ID and clear everything up. But they are still out of pocket for paying to get the car out of impound. Not to mention the indignity and hassle. But what if the gringa had been out of town? Would it be possible that injustice could occur and the caveman could find himself shipped off to Peru? Is it possible that many like him, US naturalized citizens or legal immigrants, could lose everything if such policies were enacted? The evidence is that many already have.

When Eisenhower started a racist dragnet across the country, caught in that web were many who had every right to be in this country. Yet they were deported. So, in addition to hundreds of unnecessary deaths by heat exhaustion and drowning, the lives of US citizens were destroyed simply because of the color of their skin, the ethnic quality of their name, and, perhaps, the existence of an accent.

If the operation had truly been a success, rather than funds peter out, Congress would have voted for another round. Citizens would have expected enforcement to continue. Instead, US government spin doctors churned out the propaganda that it was such a resounding success there was no more need for deportation round-ups. And it seems that those spin doctors are hard at work for the future Trump administration. Because people who are afraid of melanin can’t admit they are fraidy-cats and bigots can’t admit that bigoted actions are a failure.

So, if you are an advocate for inhumane treatment of fellow humans, ripping apart families, infringing upon the Civil Rights of all citizens and guests to this country, and destroying the lives of some of your fellow Americans, then I am sure that you will be just fine with Trump’s future plans. As long as you are not personally affected, you could care less about what might happen to those “damn furriners”. The gringa would like to ask such people, “You claim, with great pride, to be a citizen of the ‘home of the brave, right? Then why are you so afraid of people with melanin and speak with an accent? Why not grow a pair and make your country proud. Be brave. There are better solutions to this very complicated immigration problem our nation has.”

The Modern Day U.S. Slave

While most Americans spent this past weekend focused on memorials of the tragedy of 9/11, the gringa found herself getting educated at a prison protest Saturday on the anniversary of the Attica Uprising 45 years ago.  I’ll give you a rundown of a bit of history and then share some details of today’s U.S. prisons that shocked the gringa when she came to a fuller understanding.

Attica Maximum Security Correctional Facility, New York, September 9, 1975

  • 1,281 prisoners take over D yard, an exercise field.
  • 39 prison employees & guards are held hostage.
  • 13 state police & prison officers launch a raid.
  • During the raid 10 hostages & 29 prisoners are killed, 89 seriously injured

Why did this happen? Frustration over deplorable living conditions:

  • Overcrowding
  • Censorship of mail
  • 1 weekly shower
  • 1 single roll of toilet paper for an entire month (the gringa goes through a single roll PER DAY)

Personal perspective of the prisoners began to change in the radicalized climate of the late 60’s and early 70’s. They began to see themselves as political prisoners rather than just convicted criminals. After all, isn’t our nation’s law enforcement, judicial and prison systems highly politicized? Aren’t convicted criminals often used as political pawns? Of course they are. And Attica’s inmates decided it was time to participate in the political system the only way a disenfranchised citizen can, through radical, attention getting protest.

Once the more than 2,000 inmates mobilized, a riot quickly ensued that included beating guards, acquiring weapons of any sort, and torching the chapel. One guard was thrown out a second-story window after a beating and died from his injuries days later. As state police struggled to regain control of the prison, D yard became the final scene of the showdown with a hostage situation that lasted four long days.

The prisoners requested U.S. Representative Herman Badillo to lead negotiations and offered their list of demands:

  • Improved living conditions.
  • Religious freedom.
  • No more censorship of personal mail.
  • More phone privileges.
  • Amnesty for prisoners in D Yard.
  • Safe passage to a non-imperialist country for any who desired to go.

Although negotiations were on-going and none of the hostages were being harmed, Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller mobilized hundreds of state troopers and the National Guard which all soon descended upon the prison. Civilian observers who were present were dismayed by the Governor’s overt show of force and asked for him to personally appear as a sign of good faith. Rockefeller refused. Instead he gave the order for an act of force that resulted in a massive and tragic loss of life. The gringa thinks this was totally unnecessary and quite typical of the cowboy mentality that seems to take hold of the wrong kind of people who come into positions of power over other people.

Many would argue that strong leadership means being forceful and making a powerful display of strength and authority when challenged. The gringa disagrees. When in a role of managing the care of fellow human beings, even if they are convicted criminals, a strong leader must be a wise and humble benefactor. Human beings are complicated creatures with complex needs. Rockefeller was wrong to do what he did. Going in with guns blazing is absolutely the wrong approach to solve any crisis where human lives are at stake.

Rather than continue negotiations Rockefeller demanded the inmates’ surrender. They responded to his challenge by holding knives to the throats of their hostages. In short order 3,000 rounds of bullets tore through clouds of tear gas and killed not only inmates, but one fourth of the hostages. Emergency medical responders testified that some of the prisoners were shot and killed as they lie on the ground after surrendering or being wounded.

In light of this disastrous plan implemented by New York’s governor, Rockefeller tried to deflect blame with false stories fed to the press that the inmates had slit the throats of the hostages and even castrated one. Rockefeller was either extremely ignorant or extremely arrogant if he thought autopsy reports would not expose his lies. There was an eventual Congressional investigation into this cover-up and frame job of the inmates as brutal executioners.

The final aftermath of the Attica riot has reserved its place in history as the worst prison riot the United States has ever seen:

  • 43 people killed.
  • Weeks of reprisals against prisoners with torturous treatment involving nightsticks, broken glass and other measures.
  • Substandard medical treatment if it was administered at all.
  • $2.8 billion class-action lawsuit filed by 1,281 prisoners against Attica & state officials.
  • $8 million awarded to prisoners in 2000 & divided among 500 inmates.
  • By accepting death benefit checks or paychecks, prison officers & their survivors unknowingly forfeited their right to sue the state for its debacle of a rescue plan.

Today’s Prisons

The gringa can’t speak on behalf of prisons in every state, but will share two distinct and troubling characteristics of prisons in her home state of Texas:

  • Prisoners are expected to work for zero pay & can expect retribution if they refuse, often being placed in solitary confinement.
  • Prisoners must pay a $100 co-pay in order to receive medical treatment.

The gringa is struck by many shocking conclusions upon becoming aware of these facts:

  • A for-profit prison system benefitting from productivity from enslaved Americans creates a society where there are incentives in place for the justice system to generate as many arrests and convictions as possible.
  • The common thread among prisoners is financial status. Whereas the slaves of America’s past were defined by race, today’s slaves are defined by lacking the funds to launch an aggressive legal defense, which still results in minorities being over-represented in U.S. prison populations.
  • By targeting the poor as easy to imprison & profit from, a capitalist society is further growing the impoverished slave class by fracturing families and extracting breadwinners. The fractured family is further burdened by creating a single parent who needs to provide for herself, her children and her imprisoned loved one who, because enslaved and performing prison labor without pay, cannot provide for his commissary needs. The loved one on the outside must also pay for their imprisoned loved one’s toothpaste, socks, toilet paper, medical care, etc.
  • The ugly laws of the 1920s, designed by America’s elite class to rid public streets of the unsightliness of undesirables by criminalizing behaviors typical to impoverished people, have simply been reinstated through various other laws that target the poor American.

The gringa has no solutions. I have only just now had my eyes opened to the complexity of this disturbing issue. Like a good, little patriot I have been conditioned by my society to believe it is acceptable that prisoners should have, at the very least, an uncomfortable time of it. I have also been conditioned to believe that complaints by prisoners are always a con job, they are simply not to be trusted. However, by conditioning Americans to ignore the plight of prisoners, capitalists have been empowered to pursue policies that have targeted the weakest among us in order to create a slave class they can profit from.

The gringa heard the story of one mother who was visiting her 19 year-old son on the one day weekly he is able to see his loved ones. I listened in horror as she told me a tale that could have happened to my own son. A tale of a teenager arranging to purchase some expensive sneakers he had seen online. However, when he met the individuals to exchange his money for the shoes, they took his money and basically ran. It was a scam. Incensed, he tracked down the individuals and gave them a beat down to get the shoes he had paid for. He was charged not just with assault, but also with robbery. Being high end sneakers, the sale price constituted a felony. This young man was facing 8-25 years of hard time and having to place his trust in a court appointed attorney. Unlike many others like her son, this mother was very fortunate to work out a deal with a youth program yet he will still serve 6 months in prison that will certainly be a harrowing experience that will change him forever. Because he beat up a con artist and took back his shoes.

Might an affluent teenager with a hotshot lawyer have gotten off with a fine and probation or perhaps even an aquittal? It’s highly likely. However,  a low-income, minority teen is advised by a court appointed attorney to work out a plea deal, securing, at the very least, 6 months of free labor for a capitalist prison system model to profit from. And the young and strong are who the for-profit systems want for slave labor. Even a minimal sentence is a good thing for prison profiteers. It increases the chances that a 6 month slave will return for a longer stint of labor in the future. The system is ensuring that as much of the poverty rabble as possible is kept off of America’s streets and enslaved for the profit of corporations. This is outrageous.

What is the interest of a court appointed attorney who takes on a case for free? His interest is to get the case over with as soon as possible so he can get back to jobs that pay. This is not justice. Consider just a few very telling statistics and see if the gringa is right when she says that the United States should be very ashamed:

  • U.S. population of nearly 320 million.
  • In 2014 more than 2 million Americans were in prison & nearly 5 million were on probation or parole.
  • 1 in 5 prisoners are convicted of a drug related offense.
  • The underprivileged are disproportionately imprisoned, marked by the following factors: income status, race, & level of education.

The gringa does not believe any of this is an accident. Re-designing prisons as modern day plantations is purposeful. In 1964 the Civil Rights Act was passed. This had an incredible economic impact for bad or good depending on where a person stood. For minorities it was an economic boon, finally having their right to equal job opportunity and equal pay protected. For businesses that had enjoyed the freedom to pay as little as they pleased to minorities, they suffered. Imbittered, it did not take long for American businesses to devise a work around.

Within 7 years President Nixon announced the U.S. War on Drugs. Within another 7 years America’s prison systems were privatized to deal with exploding prison populations as a result of the War on Drugs. A war that has been effectively proven to disproportionately incarcerate poor, non-violent, drug offenders that are more of a threat to themselves than society, and most are capable of complete rehabilitation. American business preserved their slave class despite the Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil Rights Act. And it continues today.

Although the average citizen is conditioned to point the finger at inmates for their less than humane living conditions, what of the creators and enforcers who have the power and resources to implement change that would be decidedly better? What about other first world countries who are successful with humane, rehabilitative prison systems that are minimally populated and experience extremely low rates of returning inmates?

The gringa believes this is all by design as well. By creating and enforcing conditions that dehumanize even a non-violent drug offender who originally was no real threat to the public at large, for-profit prisons can damage a human so badly that person is incapable of living successfully and independently as a free man or woman. They ensure their slave workforce by intentionally designing living conditions that psychologically ruin a human being’s ability to ever have healthy emotional and working relationships. In the gringa’s opinion, this places every prison official in the category of guilt of crimes against humanity. And it seems that the United Nations agrees with the gringa, making it very clear that the United States is not living up to UN standards of humane treatment of incarcerated peoples.

I urge my dear readers who are as alarmed and as concerned as the gringa to use whatever is your gift or talent to help bring about awareness and change. The U.S. model of how criminals are dealt with is barbaric. No other civilized, first world nation operates in such a way. Human beings that are poor, or of the wrong ethnicity, are considered disposable in the United States. You only get one chance and if you make a mistake and end up in the prison system, there is no rehabilitation, only living conditions that reduce human beings to their basest instincts for survival. U.S. imprisonment is modern day slavery that creates a social stigma that prevents any success once free, only recidivism just to survive, where a person is then guaranteed a return to the plantation.

The gringa has provided below some video and photos from the rally.
